Packing Tips for the Whole Family
September 17, 2018Campers love having their long-awaited burgers and hotdogs cooked on the grill while they are camping. Sometimes, however, they find they’d like something easy and cool for lunch that doesn’t require a lot of work or clean up. That’s when a pasta salad comes in handy. You can make things even quicker by cooking the pasta at home and freezing it. Then pack it in a cooler and it will be ready when you are.
Use light dressings. You’ll enjoy your pasta salad more if you lean toward light dressings. Skip the mayo or heavy oil & vinegar dressings. You can make them light and refreshing by choosing oil free bottled Italian dressing, or simply spritz with citrus juice. Be aware, though, your pasta will absorb liquids so it may need a refresher from time to time if it is sitting out.
Choose seasonal veggies. Fresh, steamed veggies can add so much to a summer pasta salad. Toss in some broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, and corn. It will extend the volume of your salad and boost the nutritional value as well. You might consider some fruit, too. Orange, lemon, or grapefruit sections can be a tasty accent in your salad as well as peaches or plums. On the other hand you can try dates, raisins, or dried cranberries. It all adds to the flavor and the color combinations are delightful.
You can make your salad even prettier by trying out different shaped pastas. Try bow-ties, spirals, or even angel hair. It can change the whole look of your salad.
